A lot of people falsely believe that there are no functions of echolalia. In other words, they think there is no communicative meaning to echolalia at all. However, new research suggests otherwise. Other’s may not understand the intent of the echolalic phrase – but that doesn’t mean it’s meaningless.

It means if we can figure out what the child’s intentions are then we may be able to understand them better.
