Autism is diagnosed based on observable behaviors, and the latest research is finding that these behaviors are in actuality symptoms of serious underlying medical disorders. Left untreated, these medical disorders drastically reduce the life expectancy of those with autism. However, if these (very treatable) underlying health issues are properly addressed, the symptoms diagnosed as autism fade and children can regain significant functionality, with some even losing their diagnosis.
